The purpose of this teaching guide is to offer an introduction to the Catholic Worker newspaper. This teaching guide is ordered by decade with each decade tab offering a short introduction to that decade and then some links to some of the major world history events that took place in that decade. Neither the introductions or list of events should be viewed as complete, they are instead a short example of the Catholic Worker's output and focus during that decade.
The Catholic Worker was a newspaper founded by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin. The first issue was published May 1st, 1933 and Day and a few others passed out 2,500 copies on the street corners of New York City. The newspaper's goal was to spread awareness of social justice efforts within the church. Since then circulation has varied from time to time but currently the circulation for the Worker is 25,000.
